Reading/Book Signing for Kids!Claude the Clumsy Clydesdale by Marion E. Altieri Saturday, December 10th at East Line Books HALF OF ALL PROCEEDS GO TO CAPTAIN!! 12 noon Free Pizza! Free and Open to the Public ABOUT THE BOOK: Claude, the Clumsy Clydesdale is about Claude, a beautiful young foal and a perfect specimen of the strong, earthy and graceful Clydesdale breed. The story centers around Claude and the fact that he thinks of himself as being clumsy after comparing himself to animal friends that live with him on the farm where he was born. Dejected, he retreats to the comfort of his stall where he hides away from those he loves. But just as our hero is about to lose all hope, he must put aside his self-doubts to come to the rescue of Mother Goose and her goslings.
ABOUT THE SERIES: The Alpha Mare Series is a collection of books containing stories designed to assist parents in teaching their children life lessons pertaining to a variety of topics such as self-esteem. Each book in the series focuses on a different breed and teaches life lessons that incorporates the traits associated with the particular breed featured in a story. For example, Claude, the Clumsy Clydesdale focuses on the strength and beauty associated with Clydesdales. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Marion is the Editorial Director and Head Writer of Equicurean, an annual Saratoga-themed magazine celebrating horse racing and polo. Her writing is also featured in other publications, most notably Desert Mirage and Galopp Magasinet. The book will be of the highest quality both in content and in format. I am now looking for submissions from current and former students of any adult class or tutoring at East Line Books. Please send entries in any genre: memoir, article, essay, blog entry, fiction such as short story, book chapter, or any format. Entries should be, above all, POWERFUL. Entries should be between 500 and 2500 words and should be sent to Robyn Ringler. Competition to get your pieces published in this anthology will be tough--I am only selecting pieces that are excellently written, well-edited, and powerful. That being said, I hope every student I have ever had will send in a piece, because so many of you are truly outstanding writers and you do have powerful pieces.Deadline for submissions is January 15, 2012. Please send entries by email to RLDSR12@aol.com or drop them off at East Line Books. Include your name address and all contact information and whether your piece has been published previously (which will not normally be a problem). Thank you for supporting this project with your work! If your piece is chosen, you will be paid with a copy of the anthology (I'm sorry it's not more--we have a strained budget.) And you will be in a prestigious book, prestigious because it will be in a book of outstanding literature. Great for the resume and also something to be very proud of. Looking forward to your entries!

Please send your 9/11 memories in the form of a personal essay or memoir piece to Barbara McHugh at the Town of Clifton Park in Town Hall. Her email address is barbmchugh@cliftonpark.org. The Town is looking for moving pieces recounting memories of that infamous day ten years ago. The pieces should take no more than 3 minutes to read. And you would be required to read them in front of an audience at a gathering in Clifton Park on September 11th. I will work with the writers who are chosen to help you practice projecting to the audience and to practice reading aloud in public. It should be a very meaningful experience and I encourage you all to submit your writing. Good luck!!

FREE MEMOIR CLASS THIS THURSDAY AT EAST LINE BOOKS!!! Call 371-4151 to sign up TIME: 6:30-7:30 p.m. (A BOOK SIGNING WILL FOLLOW THE 45-MINUTE CLASS) Instructor: Marion Roach Smith Free and Open to All Students!! Put down that glue gun, toss aside that scrapbook, and take the challenge to tell your tale. A possible subtitle for this one-night class could easily be Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Memoir, but that’s a little wordy, isn’t it? We’ll talk about being too wordy, as well as every other aspect of writing what you know, in this unique, one-night, rarely-offered class. Highly informative, after this class you will be able to write memoir, whether it be a college essay, a blog, a letter home, an essay for public radio, an op-ed for the newspaper, or a book-length memoir. Marion Roach Smith is a former New York Times staffer, author of four mass-market books, and commentator on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. This will include a session during which you can pitch your tale to Marion, and she tells you how to do it. This class is offered in celebration of the publication of her new book, The Memoir Project, A Thoroughly Non-Standardized Text for Writing and Life (June, 2011, Grand Central Publishing).

Parenting our ParentsSpeaker: Pat Nugent, author of They Live On: Saying Goodbye to Mom and Dad Thursday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. at East Line Books Free & open to the public Refreshments will be served Readings by local author Patricia Nugent from her book “will encourage participants to share their experiences and concerns over the role reversal that occurs as parents age. According to Nugent, “No one thinks that day will come when their self-sufficient, bigger-than-life parents will need help with daily living skills. Yet time marches on and one day, the offspring take over and become the ones ‘in charge.’ While parents are grateful for the assistance and support, they are often resentful as well – angry about their loss of freedom and control. This session explores the dynamics that occur when our parents seemingly become our children, and we become their caregivers.”
